Memorial Tribute to Ling Ling the panda

June 29, 2008

Japan’s Ueno Zoo is going to need to start searching for another main attraction. Ling Ling, the beloved giant panda, has died at age twenty-two. That might seem young until you convert his age into panda years: Ling Ling was actually pushing seventy and was the fifth oldest male panda bear known in the world!

This is a sad day for China as well, who gifted the bear to Japan in 1992 as a symbol of friendship. Perhaps the Ueno Zoo hopes to score again with the Chinese president’s upcoming visit.

I clearly recall a lesson in second grade about Ling Ling and his fellow pandas. What lovable creature will take his place in the hearts of schoolchildren and teacher lesson plans the world over?

Japan has eight pandas on loan from China scattered amongst its zoos but, with the passing of Ling Ling, owns none. For fifteen years the black and white bear was the main draw for the Tokyo zoo. Visitors on Thursday wept at his death, praying and placing flowers at an impromptu altar.

The panda is a creature of fascination all over the world (I know because I had a stuffed animal as a child), and it hasn’t even been a century since the first live one was captured. Due to their apparent apathy for mating, giant pandas are now on the endangered species list, with about 150 in zoos and just over 1,000 in the wild.

Ling Ling was pulled from public view on Tuesday and passed on Wednesday. He leaves no offspring, as three trips to Mexico for the purpose of mating proved unsuccessful after he virtually ignored visiting female pandas.

He will be missed by panda lovers worldwide, including yours truly.
